My mom asked me to write an article to convince you why you should send your kids to SHAD. I’m not going to do that. The people who go to SHAD don’t need to be convinced. They just need to hear about it.
What is SHAD? As my campus’ program manager Justin Lim would always say, “It’s not the best month of your life, it’s the best month for your life”.
SHAD is a place where the best and brightest high school students from across Canada gather together and become members of an extensive network of leaders and future change makers. SHAD’s curriculum focuses on STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) learning while offering exposure to a wide range of disciplines in the workplace. Additionally, a large focus is placed on entrepreneurship as students are tasked with finding innovative solutions to real world big picture issues.
As well as focusing on STEAM learning and tackling problems plaguing society. SHAD provided me with lifelong friendships and bonds that will stick with me as I prepare for university.
My SHAD experience took place at Mount Allison University in the small town of Sackville, New Brunswick. As with most new environments I was anxious at first, unsure of what to expect from the 47 other students at my campus. There was nothing to worry about. The biggest benefit of SHAD is that you are surrounded with like-minded people. I made friends with kids from West Vancouver, Churchill, Manitoba, Toronto, to St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador. From coast to coast, SHAD attracts driven, creative, youth who want to make an impact on the world.
If you read this and don’t feel like this is a good way for your kid to spend their July, that’s fine. But if this program speaks to you, if your kid wants to make a positive change in the global community, … well, applications open this fall.
Editor’s Note: SHAD is a unique Canadian summer enrichment program and network where high achieving high school students are given the opportunity to participate in hands-on learning including workshops, lectures, labs and team challenges revolving around science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM). The SHAD program is designed for senior high school students (completing Grade 10, 11 or 12; Quebec Secondaire IV, V and CEGEP I; or equivalent international qualifications). The application deadline for the program is in late November. SHAD is looking for students who are well-rounded, emerging leaders who demonstrate initiative, creativity and entrepreneurial flair. They are leaders in their schools, volunteers in their communities, and are often gifted musicians, artists and athletes.
All students are welcome to apply and there is no limit to the number of students accepted to the program from any school, school board or region. Financial assistance is available. For more information go to shad.ca
